Student Liaison Program for Academic Departments

Program Goal

to facilitate faculty exploration and experimentation with new technologies for teaching, and to foster collaboration with other faculty members that enhances student learning

Expectations of student liaisons

  • work 6-10 hours per week in their assigned academic departments
  • participate in training sessions to help liaisons meet program expectations
  • become familiar with campus support procedures, points of contact for assistance
  • become familiar with our faculties= use of technology
  • provide accurate answers to questions about technology resources
  • seek out solutions to questions for which immediate answers are not known
  • work on learning technology projects specified by faculty
  • communicate regularly with the Program director and other liaisons through e-mail
  • proactively support faculty uses of technology
  • maintain a weekly journal of activity

Liaison qualifications, in order of importance

  • Ability to work with faculty in the discipline, including excellent interpersonal communication skills and interest in the discipline if not a declared major. This suggests a familiarity with the faculty of the department and junior or senior standing.
  • Ability to learn quickly about technologies that support enhanced learning, including an ability to discover new applications and assess their utility
  • Familiarity with campus information infrastructure, networked resources, procedures for accomplishing technology tasks
  • Skills and experience with technologies such as listservers and e-mail clients, assessment of networked information, web design and authoring, collaborative tools, advanced word processing, etc.

Schedules and Reporting

Scheduled hours are to be negotiated with the department faculty. Liaisons are to propose a schedule to the department chair for approval. Schedules are to be posted in the department and e-mailed to the Program director.

Reporting of work will take place through a weekly journal of activity. The journal is to be sent via e-mail to the Program director not later than 5:00 PM on the Monday following the week covered by the journal. Journals will be reviewed and advice or resources provided to assist in projects. Liaison activity as report in the journals may be summarized from time to time and returned to the department chairs. Similarly, journals should contain suggestions for improvements on projects or support.

Expectations of faculty served by liaisons

  • Explain the important elements of preferred teaching approaches
  • Establish clear pedagogical goals for projects
  • Discuss both theoretical and practical issues with liaisons
  • Work with liaisons to select and experiment with new technologies
  • Schedule times in advance for liaisons to help support these experiments
  • Report successes or failures to liaisons and Program director
