"Exploring the Possibilities"
These events are designed to allow our faculties to explore the myriad possibilities afforded by modern information technologies to enhance learning. In sessions that resemble a technological smorgasbord, participants will be able to survey many possible approaches prior to making decisions about if and what learning technologies may meet their students' needs. Many of the sessions will be presented by faculty who can speak directly to the utility of these learning technologies. Participants will be encouraged to engage in other elements of the Mellon Program, including gatherings of the disciplines and the faculty grant program that funds collaborative projects.

I. Accessing Information 9:15-10:30
We will examine methods for the discovery and retrieval of information including the databases of the Five Colleges of Ohio and OhioLINK as well as resources on the web. Possibilities featured in this session include:- Academic Universe (Priscilla Mcintosh and Ric Sheffield)
- Electronic Journal Center (Mary Prophet)
- Consort searches and OhioLINK services (Frank Wojcik)
- The JSTOR project (Susan Scott)
- Electronic reserves for course material (Walter Shriner)
- General web resources; issues of quality and search methods (Scott Siddall)
II. Finding Value in Information 10:45-12:00
These learning technologies enable us to work with information that we have found, to create complex problem-solving exercises, and to organize information in productive ways:- Economic simulations and mathematical visualization (Ross Laroe, Judy Holdener)
- Multimedia in the study of language (Clara Roman-Odio)
- Geographic information systems (Karl Korfmacher)
III. Sharing and Publishing 1:15-2:15
These tools make it possible to share easily our findings, to communicate with students and colleagues, to encourage students to engage with course materials outside of class, and to publish on the web.- E-mail and web discussion systems (Gareth Euridge, Laurie Finke)
- Publishing on the web (Bill Quimby, David Marcey)
IV. Collaborating and Teaching 2:30-3:30
In this session, we will focus on technologies to foster collaborative learning within and beyond the classroom, and to enhance learning by sharing resources between campuses.- Collaborative writing tools (Jesse Savage, Scott Siddall)
- Videoconferencing for individuals and classes (Scott Siddall)
- Collaborative web projects as course assignments (Peter Rutkoff and Will Scott, David Marcey)
