Update on Remote Collaboration Classrooms

Watch several video clips of classes being taught in our remote collaboration classrooms.

A second video conferencing system has been added to the Denison remote collaboration classroom. This new system operates over both telephone and Internet connections, and adds another "channel" to our facility. The existing Tandberg systems have also been made compatible with Internet based video systems (H.323 standards), and some desktop systems have been added. A report on the facilities inclulding these upgrades is available. You can now check the schedule for these facilities online as well.

Next Deadline for Faculty Grants is March 19, 2001

The deadline for the next round of faculty grants is Monday, March 19. All faculty members of Denison and Kenyon are encouraged to read the guidelines and apply. Grants support interinstitutional projects, can include faculty release time, and can be as large as $15,000. It is vital the proposals being received well in advance of the semester in which any resulting courses are to be offered so that our students have the chance to enroll.

Online modules on the use of CourseInfo and other web-based course tools

"How can I help my students come to class prepared to take part in the discussion?" "How can I help my students get more involved in the course content?" If you are asking those kinds of questions about your classes, you may find some help from some new material the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges is making available to faculty. This curriculum deals with pedagogically-effective ways to use Web-based course support. Each of the seven modules deals with a different use of the Web, starting with a discussion of pedagogical principles and then providing step-by-step instructions for BlackBoard's CourseInfo and WebCT. These and the other documents in the curriculum are available from http://www.imowa.org/dm/dm_flip_index.html.

Faculty interested in Middle Eastern studies and language at both campuses have proposed a collaborative project to offer Arabic at both institutions. More news will be forthcoming about this proposal if it is funded.

Colloquium in Economics being planned

The Mellon Program is providing support for a day-long colloquium in economics being organized by Denison Professor of Economics Robin Bartlett. The plan is to bring together the economics faculties of several Ohio schools to discuss the role of technology in teaching economics, to hear from those who have led successful applications of technology in their teaching, and to explore possibilities for collaborative projects. Funds are available for colloquia in other disciplines; contact Scott Siddall for more information.

Students who serve in these roles will be nominated by department chairs; our experience in a successful pilot program at Kenyon suggests that your departmental majors are often the best candidates. The students will be able to work in departments for six to ten hours per week funded by the Mellon Program. More details of the Student Liaison Program and a call for nominations will be sent to department chairs in August.

Remote Collaboration Classrooms Update

During the week of October 5, Denison's and Kenyon's new videoconferencing facilities, called "remote collaboration classrooms," were installed. Throughout the weeks of October 12 and 19, we are working on several communications problems which are affecting the performance of these systems. Later in October, we will begin training support staff in the routine operation of the facilities, in preparation for faculty training sessions in November. Our goal is to enable faculty who have shown an early interest in the facilities to become basically familiar with videoconferencing so they might incorporate remote collaboration experiences into their second semester classes on an experimental basis. A "Grand Opening" of the Denison and Kenyon remote collaboration classrooms is tentatively set for early December. Faculty colleagues from two other institutions will join us at that event to demonstrate their highly successful uses of videoconferencing in their teaching. Watch this web site for more information!

Remote Collaboration Classrooms are just around the corner!

During the week of October 5, Denison's and Kenyon's new videoconferencing facilities, called "remote collaboration classrooms," will be completed. Renovations have been taking place during the summer and early first semester. By October 11, installation technicians from Tandberg USA will complete the installation and testing of the Tandberg Educator 5000 systems. The Denison facility is located in room 115 of the Learning Resources Center. The Kenyon facility is located in room 25 of Ascension Hall. Both classrooms will have large screen monitors, two video cameras, color projection systems for computer, VCR and videoconference projection, sound systems and full-room microphone coverage, and networked computers. The Tandberg Educator systems are well known for their high-quality images and ease of control for the speaker or conference moderator. Our aspirations for these facilities are to enhance learning of our residential students by sharing resources and collaborating easily without the limits of our geography.

After the facilities are tested and support staff trained, experienced faculty from other institutions will visit Denison and Kenyon to demonstrate uses of similar facilities at their institutions. Following this "grand opening," Program staff will coordinate training sessions for faculty. Our goal is to provide sufficient experience to selected faculty so that they are encouraged to experiment with the facilities in their courses during second semester.

We just put up the new site, and we hope you like it! Thanks for creating the site go to Kenyon students George Faerber '00, Audrey Swanstrom '00, and Atool Varma '01.

Denison University and Kenyon College collaborate with Mellon Foundation teaching and technology grant

GAMBIER, OHIO - Denison University and Kenyon College have received a $735,000 grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York City for a three-year program to increase technological literacy among faculty members and students on the two campuses.

The grant will fund workshops that will allow Faculty members to explore possible uses of technology in teaching and collaborative projects for new, approaches within their disciplines or in interdisciplinary programs. It is hoped that the workshops will encourage those who are inexperienced with computing, as well as those who are experienced, to use new approaches in technology.

The goals of the collaboration between the colleges include improving pedagogy, extending faculty expertise, creating new curricular opportunities, promoting a better understanding of technology, developing new methods of cost containment, and expanding collaborative efforts within the institutions.

Denison and Kenyon have already developed a strong track record of effective collaboration, with accompanying cost containment, through participation in the Five Colleges of Ohio consortium. The consortiurn, which consists of Kenyon and Oberlin colleges, Denison and Ohio Wesleyan universities, and the College of Wooster, received a grant for $840,000 from the Mellon Foundation in 1995 to fund its first collaborative library efforts.

For more information about the recent grant, contact Scott E. Siddall, project director and director of advanced technology at Kenyon, at 740-427-5696 or via e-mail at siddall@kenyon.edu.
