Developing Collaborative Capacity with Geographic Information Systems

Interim Project Report
24 January 2000, Siobhan Fennessy, Kenyon College

The ArcView software package was purchased for use on the Kenyon Campus. Several analytical extension packages were included that will allow for environmental and landscape analysis (including "Spatial Analyst", "3-D Analyst", and "Network Analyst"). The ArcView Internet Map Server was also purchased which will allow GIS projects to be posted to the web and enable exchange of projects and ideas between Kenyon and Denison. Several Kenyon faculty participated in the 5-day GIS workshop held in August, 1999, and are planning to continue their project work and collaboration with Denison through the use of ArcView.

We have also worked to create a shared GIS data base that will incorporate both the Denison Biological Reserve and the Brown Family Environmental Center at Kenyon and surrounding watersheds. This will form the basis for a joint laboratory project for the Environmental Studies course at Denison and the Experimental Ecology course at Kenyon. This should be tested in the spring semester.
