Faculty Projects- "Hands-on Learning in Calculus via Web-based Applets," for $8,000 awarded to Keith Howard (Kenyon) and Lewis Ludwig (Denison). This project seeks to create web-based applets for use in the calculus sequence as an improvement over the use of licensed software to meet similar needs.
- "Off-Campus Study and Significant Academic Differences," for $13,500 awarded to Barbara Hamlet (Kenyon), Ruth Falkner (Wooster) and Patti Brown (Denison). The goal of this project is to make use of the tremendous resources of faculty and students who have been overseas, and to find ways in which we can help our students studying abroad cope in a different academic culture.
- "Maplets in Mathematics," for $10,500 awarded to Jim Hartman and Jon Breitenbucher (The College of Wooster) and Daniel Bonar (Denison). This project provides collaborative training and development for Ohio Five faculty interested in using Maplet that are part of the Maple computer algebra system.
- "Linkages and Contradictions of Global Processes," for $16,400 awarded to Sita Ranchod-Nilsson (Denison) and Clifton Crais (Kenyon). This collaborative project is creating an interdisciplinary course taught across three institutions: Denison University, Kenyon College and the University of Nairobi in Kenya.
- "Student Assessments in Language using Web Portfolios" for $2,500 awarded to Gary Baker, Susan Garcia, Cheryl Johnson (Denison) and Clara Roman-Odio (Kenyon).
- Digital Asset Management, a collaborative project among the Five Colleges to organize and share multimedia materials. Funding provided for software licenses and training ($7,225).
- "Calculus Labs," for $12,250 awarded to Judy Holdener and Keith Howard (Kenyon) and Zaven Karian and Lewis Ludwig (Denison).
- "Multiple Cultures in French," for $5,000 awarded to Margaret Fete of Ohio Wesleyan and Susan Binckley of Wooster (Read the interim report and final report).
- "Euro Summer Program," for $15,000 awarded to David Cleeton (Oberlin). This program provides an introduction to international business through formal study and visits to majorbusiness and financial centers in Europe. The program involved students from Oberlin, Denison and Kenyon in 2001(see the project's final report). This project has been renewed for summer 2002 with a grant of $10,000 for a program involving students from all five colleges.
- "Arabic Language Instruction," for $17,200 awarded to Gary Baker (Denison), Eve Moore (Kenyon) and colleagues Marlee Meriwether, Bahram Tavakolian, and Vernon Schubel. This project has been renewed for the 2002-03 academic year with a grant of $15,401.
- "Video clip exercises for Intermediate Chinese," for $5,780 awarded to Xinda Lian of Denison and Jianhua Bai of Kenyon. (See course web site). This project has been renewed for 2002-03 with an award of $3,480 to Jianhua Bai and Xinda Lian.
- "Greek Drama Today," for $9,600 awarded to Thomas van Nortwick of Oberlin College, and colleagues. (See the project's final report).
- "Visiting Faculty Program in Classics," for $13,000 awarded to Robert Bennett of Kenyon College, and colleagues. (See the project's interim report.)
- "Making Prints in a Digital World" for $15,000 awarded to Claudia Esslinger of Kenyon and Ron Abram of Denison. (See the project's web site and final report).
- "Shakespeare and Film," for $14,960 awarded to Lisa McDonnell of Denison and Sergei Lobanov-Rostovsky of Kenyon. (See final report by Lisa and interim reports by Lisa and Sergei).
- "Beginning Japanese: Continuing Collaboration," for $3,700 awarded to Susan Jevitt of Kenyon College.
- "Denison-Kenyon Virtual Research Communities," for $21,216 (two proposals merged) awarded to Eric Liebl of Denison University and Siobhan Fennessey of Kenyon College. (See the project's web site and interim and final project reports).
- "Distance Learning Course for Advanced Chinese," for $14,740 awarded to Jianhua Bai of Kenyon College. (See interim project report).
- "Psychology Internet Research Lab," for $6,400 awarded to Frank Hassebrock, David Przybyla and Sarah Hutson-Comeaux of Denison University. (See interim project report). This project received additional funding of $9,900 to continue through 2001-2002. (See final report and a paper presented at the 2001 APS meeting).
- "GIS Workshops for enhancing spatial analyses in the classroom," for $15,000 awarded to Karl Korfmacher of Denison University and Siobhan Fennessey of Kenyon College. (See project report).
- "A collaboration in computer music," for $8,814 awarded to Andrew Glendening of Denison University and Ted Buehrer of Kenyon College.(See the project web site and interim project report).
- "EndStop, a national college e-magazine," for $16,000 awarded to Michael Brint and Sam Ottenhoff of Kenyon College, and Gareth Euridge of Denison University.
- Through the Student Liaison Program for Academic Departments, students help our faculty members explore and experiment with new technologies for teaching.
- "Collaboration in Middle Eastern, South Asian, and International Studies," for $5,575 awarded to Bahram Tavakolian and Meena Khandelwal of Denison and Wendy Singer of Kenyon. (See Prof. Tavakolian's project report and Prof. Khandelwal's project report).
- "Increasing Accessibility of Examples in Abstract Algebra Using Computer-based Projects," for $8,134 awarded to Peter Blanchard of Denison and Judy Holdener of Kenyon. (See project report, the project web site and continuing collaborative work).
- "Developing Collaborative Capacity with Geographic Information Systems," for $5,750 awarded to Siobhan Fennessy of Kenyon. (See interim project report and final project report).
- "Enhancing Learning in Probability and Statistics via Symbolic Computing and Internet Technologies," for $15,000 to Bradley Hartlaub and Brian Jones of Kenyon and Zaven Karian of Denison. (See project report). NOTE: Brian Jones presentation was awarded "Best Contributed Paper" at the Joint Statistical Meetings 2001.
- "Collaboration in Asian Studies" Language Instruction," for $7,748 awarded to Rita Kipp of Kenyon and Barry Keenan of Denison. (See project report).
- "GIS Workshops for Enhancing Spatial Analyses in the Classroom," for $15,000 awarded to Karl Korfmacher of Denison.
- Joint seminars on the Cleveland Museum of Art's exhibition of Diego Rivera's paintings have been conducted using the remote collaboration classrooms.
- Several "Exploring the Possibilities" workshops have been conducted involving 75 of our faculty members; session contents have been put online.
- A Kenyon art historian has developed a catalogue of visual resources online, and has described her experiences in creating an online lecture.
- Remote collaboration classrooms on both campuses are operational; we've held several exploratory sessions in the facilities, and courses are being taught regularly, especially in less commonly taught languages.
- Gareth Euridge of Denison and Laurie Finke of Kenyon participated in a teaching with technology program at Reed College, June 26-28.
