Beginning Japanese: Continuing Collaboration
Abstract:
The purpose of this proposed project is to continue a distance learning course of Beginning Japanese that was part of a pilot project during the 1999-2000 year. This project will integrate the use of the teleconferencing facility and web-based technology. In this project, one class, instructed from Kenyon and open to students on both campuses, will be attempted.
Beginning Japanese, taught at Kenyon, will be open to Denison students. Already three students from Denison have expressed an interest in such a course. Since this is a continuation of a project attempted by the Asian Studies department during the 1999-2000 school year, I aim to use Hideo Tomita`s assessment of the pilot project to attempt to overcome the difficulties and limitations that he encountered in his distance learning course.
Although the class will use the teleconferencing facilities to broadcast the class to Denison students, Denison students will come to the Kenyon campus to meet their instructor and classmates on various occasions. Some of these visits might be for social activities related to class, while others would be for the purpose of testing and evaluation.
